Red Team
Red-team runs generate adversarial prompts, run them through your agent, and score whether the response stayed inside the behavior you expected.
This page is source-grounded in HPD-Agent.Evaluations/RedTeam and the red-team tests. The runner is not a separate execution engine: it generates ordinary eval cases, applies strategies, runs RunEvals, and interprets evaluator failures as attack success.

This shape is useful for local wiring and deterministic smoke tests. For safety-grade scoring, use judge or policy evaluators configured with a dedicated judge agent/client.
Pick Starter Plugins
Start with plugins that match your agent's real blast radius. A support bot with no tools usually does not need the same first suite as an admin agent with write tools.

Case count is roughly CasesPerPlugin * plugin count * strategy output count. Some strategies emit more than one case per input, so keep smoke runs small.
Use Judge Or Safety Evaluators For Real Gates
Deterministic evaluators are excellent for smoke tests. They are usually too brittle for broad red-team scoring.

Store-backed reports are built from records for the current experiment name, so set a stable ExperimentName for CI or nightly runs.
Load A Suite From JSON Or YAML
RedTeamRunConfig can load plugin and strategy names from JSON or YAML. This is useful when you want the suite reviewed separately from code.

Read Results As Signals
Red-team results tell you where to investigate. They do not replace product policy, security review, or human approval for sensitive workflows.
Start with one plugin and one or two cases per plugin. Add more plugins and strategies after the first report is easy to inspect.
AttackSuccessRate means "the configured evaluator judged the case as failed." In the in-memory report path, attack success is true when:
- the report case has evaluator failures
- a boolean metric is
false - a numeric metric is below
0.5
That makes evaluator choice part of the definition of attack success. A strict evaluator can raise the rate. A weak evaluator can hide real issues.
Use the grouped rates to prioritize investigation:

}Do not compare attack success rates across suites unless the plugin set, strategy set, evaluators, judge model, and thresholds are the same.
Validation Risks
Generated cases are templates, not proof of coverage. They are useful regression pressure, but they do not exhaust the attack space.
Single-turn strategies that contain "Turn 1" text are still one input unless your agent or test harness explicitly runs a multi-turn conversation. Treat them as escalation-shaped prompts, not true multi-turn transcripts.
Some red-team plugins require app-specific evaluators. For example, UnauthorizedActionPlugin is only meaningful if your evaluator can tell whether a protected action happened or was refused.
Obfuscation strategies can change the task so much that failures become evaluator artifacts. Inspect examples before turning them into release gates.
Troubleshooting
AttackSuccessRate is 0 with an obviously unsafe response: your evaluator probably passed it. Inspect report.EvaluationReport.Cases and the metric values. For judge evaluators, verify the judge response parsed.
Every case is an attack success: confirm the safe-response evaluator is not inverted. OutputContainsEvaluator("I can't reveal secrets") fails unless that exact string appears.
No cases were generated: check that Plugins is not empty. The runner defaults missing strategies to BasicStrategy, but it does not default missing plugins.
Too many cases: reduce CasesPerPlugin, reduce strategies, or remove variant-producing strategies such as best-of-n and retry mutation.
Store-backed findings include older records from a reused run name: set a unique ExperimentName for ad hoc runs, or intentionally reuse one only when you want a long-running suite history. The runner reads records for the current experiment/session name when PersistResults is enabled.
A config file fails to load: verify the plugin and strategy ids. The parser normalizes names, but unknown ids throw.
What Not To Overclaim
Do not claim a passing red-team run proves the agent is secure. It only says the configured suite did not find a failure.
Do not claim AttackSuccessRate is an independent security metric. It is derived from evaluator failures and metric thresholds.
Do not use red-team results without inspecting examples. The prompt, response, evaluator reason, plugin id, strategy id, and attack goal matter more than the aggregate number during early tuning.
Do not ship a high-impact workflow based only on generic plugins. Add domain-specific plugins or evaluators for your authorization, data, and tool policies.
